At Braubach, Turner crossed back to the left bank of the Rhine on August 23, 1817. Just before the town of Boppard, Turner looks back at the expansive loop of the Rhine. The play of light with the rainbow makes this watercolor one of the most charming representations from the series of Middle Rhine motifs. Originally, this watercolor (along with 35 other views) was intended for the publisher B. Cooke. He later decided against the project, which did not prevent Turner from executing the sketches anyway.
