Burg Liebenstein
Zu den Burgen 1, 56341 Kamp-Bornhofen
The castle of Liebenstein, built in the 13th century, along with the nearby castle of Sterrenberg, is referred to as "The Hostile Brothers."
The two castles have been irreconcilably feuding since 1320, after Sterrenberg completely fell to the Archdiocese of Trier, and the lords of Liebenstein retreated entirely to Castle Liebenstein. The construction of a massive shield wall at Sterrenberg architecturally documents how deep the ideological divide between the two groups was. Furthermore, the castle of Liebenstein already served as a common heritage castle in 1340: common heirs were noble families who jointly inhabited a castle complex due to inheritance divisions. Liebenstein even united around ten families as a merger of several small castles, who lived in different buildings.
The buildings of the common heirs can still be recognized today at Castle Liebenstein, where a hotel with a restaurant has been integrated following extensive renovation starting in 1977.
